37 Miners Reportedly Killed in Gas Leak in Plateau
No fewer than 37 miners have reportedly died following a carbon monoxide leak in Kampani Zurak community, Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State. A local miner, Safiyanu Haruna, who confirmed the incident, said more than 20 others sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital in Wase town for treatment. According to him, the tragedy occurred in the early hours of Wednesday. The miners had reportedly left the site for morning prayers and returned around 6:30am, when they were overcome by the gas. Haruna said there was no immediate rescue effort at the time, as those scheduled to resume work later in the morning had not yet arrived. He described the loss as devastating for families who relied on mining for survival. Funeral prayers for the deceased are said to be ongoing in the community.
