APC Set to Absorb “Obidient” Movement as Balami Makes Bold Move

By Opaluwa Oguche

A quiet but significant shift may be taking place in the Obedient movement camp as Isaac Balami, once a visible figure within the Obidient movement, has announced plans to move a large portion of that structure into the All Progressives Congress.

For many young Nigerians who invested time, energy, and belief into the Obidient movement, this is personal.

It raises questions about loyalty, direction, and what happens when movements built on passion meet the harsh reality that highlights the importance of political structure.

Balami stated that his decision is rooted in conviction. Having worked closely within the system, he believes aligning with the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu offers a more practical path to influence and inclusion, emphasising what this holds for young people and underrepresented communities.

His argument is simple but difficult to ignore. In Nigeria, emotions alone do not win elections.
They are won by structure, reach, and strategic positioning. According to him, the energy that once powered the Obidient movement can still serve a purpose, but within a platform he believes has the machinery to deliver results. A platform like the one that President Tinubu is steering.

This also makes one reflect deeply. Movements like the Obidient wave were never just about politics. They represented hope for the common Nigerian, frustration of the people, and a desire for something different. Shifts like this can feel like a departure, or to some, even a betrayal. To others, it may appear as an adaptation.

There is also the backdrop of a ruling party seeking to strengthen itself ahead of 2027, with figures like Nentawe Yilwatda emerging through consensus, signalling internal cohesion and alignment plus a readiness for the next electoral cycle.

What is clear is this: Nigeria’s political landscape is evolving, and alliances are shifting in ways that will shape the next election.
