Indonesia Bans Kids Under 16 from Social Media — Starting Today
Starting March 28, 2026, Indonesia has officially restricted children under 16 from creating or using accounts on high-risk platforms, including TikTok, X (Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, Threads, YouTube, Bigo Live, and Roblox.
The government says this is to protect kids from pornography, scams, cyberbullying, and smartphone addiction — calling it a “digital emergency” and a way to reclaim the sovereignty of children’s futures.
Platforms must comply immediately, or face fines or service restrictions. X (Twitter) and Bigo Live have already updated age restrictions, while TikTok, Roblox, and others are rolling out safeguards.
With over 70 million kids under 16 in Indonesia, this is one of the largest social media interventions in the world, and the first of its kind in Southeast Asia outside the West.
Me;
Will restricting kids under 16 online protect them… or will tech-savvy teens find ways around it anyway?
