NDC Founder Henry Serieke Dickson Fires Back at Umar Ardo, Defends Party Registration

Henry Serieke Dickson, former Bayelsa State governor and current founder and national leader of the New Democratic Congress (NDC), has responded sharply to criticisms from Dr. Umar Ardo, describing them as misleading and disappointing given their long-standing friendship.

At the center of Ardo’s allegation is the claim that the NDC’s registration was improper or influenced. Dickson clarified that the NDC registration process did not start recently. The application began in 2017, years before Ardo initiated his own political efforts. Progress was delayed due to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) suspension of new party registrations under Mahmood Yakubu.

Once the suspension lifted, the NDC resumed its application and was among over 170 political associations awaiting screening. INEC initially declined the application, citing similarities between the NDC’s proposed logo and that of the APC.

The NDC challenged INEC’s decision in court, offering to change the logo—a proposal reportedly rejected. The court ultimately ruled in Dickson’s favor, affirming the party’s right to association and directing INEC to register them. INEC complied, issuing the certificate of registration and monitoring the party’s first NEC meeting according to electoral guidelines.

No appeal was filed by INEC within the legal timeframe, making the judgment final and binding. Dickson noted that the NDC is not alone in registering via court action; other parties, including the NDP, followed similar legal routes.

Addressing Ardo directly, Dickson suggested that his frustrations may relate more to internal disputes around the ADA than the NDC.

The statement emphasized that the NDC is growing, attracting members across Nigeria and the diaspora, and positioning itself as a credible alternative for politicians and citizens seeking change.

Dickson concluded with a firm warning against sponsored misinformation, insisting that the NDC’s registration is lawful, final, and beyond challenge.
